ASUS has always tried to push the limits of mobile hardware with their ROG Phone series by cramming the absolute best specs available into one piece of bleeding-edge tech. The lineup has seen consistent gains ever since its launch and the company isn’t stopping anytime soon. In fact, reports suggest the next generation of the ROG Phone is about to be as extreme as it gets. A new leak coming from Digital Chat Station has revealed the alleged specs of the ROG Phone 6. We already know that the phone was going to be a flagship to the teeth, as evident from its past iterations. However, these new details give us some extra insight of how the ROG Phone 6 may stack up against the competition.

ROG Phone 6 leaked specs

Firstly, the device will supposedly come with a 6.78-inch OLED display from Samsung, tuned to run at 165Hz and at FHD+ resolution. That’s higher than the previous model which capped out at 144Hz. No word on the touch sampling rate but we can assume it will be quite high to provide the smoothest experience possible.  Underneath that display is a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, basically the “Pro” version of the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Current rumors suggest this new, upgraded SoC is more efficient than its predecessor which would bode well for battery timings, something that’s especially crucial in a gaming phone that will be abused most of the time. Speaking of battery, the phone sports a massive 6000mAh cell with 65W fast charging. Another leak suggests that this battery would be split up into two cells, just like last year’s model. That’s extremely impressive in of itself, but pairing that with a more efficient SoC means that this phone could be a contender for the best battery life of the year. Aside from the battery, the ROG Phone 6 is said to feature 18GB of RAM. That’s right, 18. That’s more than most people’s desktops! Wccftech writes that they believe this is LPDDR5 memory, which is even more performant. Whether ASUS will launch lesser variants of this phone with lower memory (and storage capacity) remains yet to be seen; the company has historically done so.  Lastly, there’s also a fingerprint sensor under the screen along with a new, 30% larger vapor chamber powering the cooling system that’s in place to keep the SoC in check. Once again, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was infamous for running hot, so a more efficient chip paired with an even better cooling system should result in some nice performance improvements.  As for the back of the phone, the leaker states a 64MP triple camera array (with the 64MP sensor most likely being the primary one). We know from a different leak that the other two cameras are a 13MP ultrawide and a 5MP macro lens. There’s also going to be a 12MP front selfie-camera.  Overall, the phone weighs in at around 229 grams with a thickness of 10.39mm. That puts in the league of some of the more bulkier phones around but that’s to be expected from a flagship of this caliber.

Maturing vs. improving

That about wraps it up for this round of leaks. With everything in mind, the ROG Phone 6 is looking like an absolute mammoth of a phone. Every year, the company tries to one-up itself in more and more ridiculous ways but it actually seems like this year is not that crazy.  After all, the outgoing ROG Phone 5s already has a 6000mAh battery and 18GB of RAM in its top-spec’d Pro model. So, it’s clear that ASUS has hit a glass ceiling of sorts and now the upgrades are more incremental and perhaps more mature.  At this stage, it’s all about making the device realize its full potential with the hardware it already has. Maybe the software is something ASUS and other manufacturers can look at to take Android gaming phones even further. We already know that iPhones and iPads run nearly every game better than Android phones do, so this is a nice area of improvement to focus on going forward. While there is no official confirmation of any of these specs, and that’s why we advise you to take these with a grain of salt, it looks like these are pretty damn real. The expected launch of the ROG Phone 6 is also not far away, so we won’t have to wait much longer to see the phone materialize. ASUS is rumored to launch the device on July 5th, 2022, which would make it the first phone in the market shipping with the new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. Global availability is still up in the air as always, but Taiwan and Chinese regions are expected to get the phone first, with the rest of the world to follow suit later.
